Yet another instance has occurred giving the junk car industry a bad name. In Bennington, VT, a town of 15,000 people about an hour northwest of Albany, a criminal allegedly removed a van from a business for the purpose of selling it for scrap. The August 7th edition of the Bennington Banner ran a report by Keith Whitcomb releasing the following: “A man pleaded not guilty to stealing his employer’s van and selling it for scrap metal. Robert Mackey was charged with grand larceny, and aggravated vehicle operation w/o owner consent. Vincent Annunziata, GM of Fat Spy Lodge said a white van owned by the business had gone missing and that Mackey was the last person to have the use of it. Mackey’s mother told police that he called her and said “Vinny” told him he could have a van in lieu of wages he was owed through work at the Fat Spy. The mother told police her son had sold the van to an auto business near NY. Police learned from Kelly Auto in Hebron, that Mackey sold a white van for $400. Kelly Auto had already sold the van’s tires & battery for $220. If sold whole, the van is worth between $2,000 and $3,000. The employees said Mackey had removed blankets from the van after selling it, making them think he had been living in it. They had also been contacted by Mackey’s mother, asking if Mackey had dropped off the van yet. She called a 2nd time to say the van was stolen. She offered to pay the company the $400 it paid for the van. The police got a tip that Mackey was working in Manchester and he was arrested.” See full story is here: http://www.benningtonbanner.com/
This story illustrates a 31 year old guy who puts himself in a position to face felony theft charges for a lousy $400. Now keep in mind that he knows he will be the primary suspect, since he was the last user of the van and further verifies his guilt by abruptly leaving town. What is a 31 year old man’s mother getting involved in an auto theft case for? Okay, I think I have it figured out… This guy lives at home with his mother and decides to obviously quit his job and sleep in a van until he can sell it for $400, all while acquiring a felony charge. It is an understatement to label this genius as a loser with a “capital L”.
